Things went horribly wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|handle the situation, but it was like trying to stop a tsunami with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the impact of this unmitigated catastrophe.

This problem has spiraled out of control. It's a total catastrophe. We've tried just about everything to fix it, but nothing seems to be effective. At this point, it feels like we're doomed. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a mess of epic proportions.

Dreadful Day Ever

It all started with an case of morning hair. I couldn't figure it to look decent. As I was running out the door, I stumbled and spilled all over the floor. To make matters worse, I was completely late for work.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then it went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to throw your hands up.
